Mission/Service:  The Tribal court, as an important entity in the sovereign powers of the tribal government, will act as a mediator, referee and interpreter in disputes and conflicts between people in the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation

Service population:  Total Jurisdiction Population 10,589 

The Cheyenne river Sioux Tribal Court serves a population of 10,589 and has a geographical jurisdiction area of 4,375 square miles.

Services offered:  The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Court consists of the Children’s Civil and Criminal divisions, Small Claims, mediation, Appellate Court, Probation Department and the /court Process divisions.

Each branch of the court has Clerks that are available to assist any Party of a court action and forms are available for filing court actions.

Accomplishments:

  • The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Children’s Court processed a total of 2,286 Petitions and held 1,898 Hearings.
  • The Criminal Court processed 6,073 cases; the Civil Court processed 840 cases; the Small Claims division has 185 cases filed and held 1,273 hearings; the Mediation Program processed 197 cases; and the Appellate court heard 17 cases in the past year.

Message:  The Tribal Court is a branch of the Tribal Government.  The court is to interpret laws, handle and resolve disputes and conflicts for the people.
